Built as stock loco in 1967, D1388 was stored outside Hudswell Clarke's works in Leeds without wheels and axles until 1970, when she was sold to the National Coal Board (NCB)'s Coal Products division. It was delivered to the latter's Avenue Coke and Carbonisation Plant near Chesterfield in November 1970, where it worked until the early 1990s.
All was not lost however as the locomotive was acquired for preservation, becoming part of the Shropshire Loco Collection. At the dawn of the millennium, all 56 locomotives in the collection were acquired by the Somerset and Dorset Locomotive Company (S&DLC). However some, including D1388, never moved to the S&DLC's Yeovil site and were instead sold on. D1388 and fellow Husdwell-built diesel shunter no.D1345 (since named 'Grace'), were acquired by their present owner, Andrew Briddon in 2002 and moved to the former MOD (Ministry of Defence) depot at Long Marston, Warwickshire in July of that year.
Following restoration, the locomotive was hired through RMS Locotec to concrete block and block paving manufacturer Plasmor at Selby in February 2004. In April 2004, the locomotive was moved to Peak Rail, before moving again on June 21, 2005, to Snibston Discovery Park in Leicestershire. It's next move took it to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in Derbyshire, where it was used on track maintenace trains, joining two of Andrew's other locomotives, in the shape of English Electric 0-6-0 No.D1230 'Kimberley' (which is also now on CRS metals) and English Electric 0-6-0 No.D1201 'Jana'.
The locomotive arrived at the Cambrian Railways Society's Llanddu compound on Monday April 20, 2009, joining two other locomotives owned by Andrew Briddon in the shape of English Electric 0-6-0 No.D1230 and Hunslet 0-4-0DH no.9222 of 1984. 'Claire' will prove invaluable in assisting with the re-opening of the Llynclys Junction to Blodwell railway line.
